YelverCare depends on volunteers to provide all its services. We would be delighted to hear from you if you were willing to consider becoming a volunteer. We need help in two areas:
- Bagholders – this involves taking the bag containing booking paperwork and answering the phone for one morning a month. The role involves taking calls from clients who require transport and ringing volunteers to match a driver to each request. There is a very simple system for recording these and training will be given in operating the system. It is necessary to answer the phone from 10 am to 1 pm but you may need to put in a bit more time to ensure that all requests are covered.
- Drivers – if you volunteer as a driver, you don’t have to commit yourself to any specific time. Instead, the duty boxholder will contact you from time to time to ask if you can handle a particular request. There is never any problem in saying no and you can offer as much or as little availability as you wish. Some journeys are to the surgery, dentist or other venues in Yelverton; others are to Derriford, Tavistock Hospital or a local supermarket. Expenses are fully covered at 45p per mile.
If you are willing to consider one or both of these roles, please send a message using the contact form. Our volunteer co-ordinator will then get in touch with you. An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check is carried out as part of the induction process.
